There is no activity in our lives as important as worship. Believing this, there is no greater privilege and responsibility than to lead others in worship. Worship involves everything we do, and most often we lead in worship through the medium of music. At Blacksburg Baptist Church, we believe in the power of music to change lives for the better. It provides a means of expression for our praise, and it affords us the opportunity to use our talents in God's service. We have choirs for every age, from 3 years old through senior adults, as well as small ensembles, handbells, and instrumental opportunities. Our choirs lead worship every Sunday, and also play a large role in many special events throughout the church year – ones that feature various choirs and groups within the music ministry.
The Chancel Choir is the backbone of our ministry. Meeting on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m., these choir members help lead services on a weekly basis, utilizing a wide variety of music. We are open to anyone who would like to be involved. In addition to their contributions to our weekly services, they prepare a concert of seasonal music at Christmas and Easter and other special services throughout the year.
The Praise Team plays a very active role in leading our 11:15 a.m. worship service. They rehearse on a weekly basis, following the Chancel practice. The minister of music selects members for the praise team from the various choirs of the church.
The Praise Band leads worship in our 10 a.m. contemporary worship service. They rehearse on Thursday evenings. The minister of music and worship leader select members for this group.
The BBC Ringers meet on Sunday evenings from 4:30-5:30. No experience is necessary to be a part of this choir, including music reading! A wide variety of music will be utilized, and we will start with basic ringing skills before moving on to more advanced techniques. This choir contributes to our morning worship services on a monthly basis, as well as special seasonal programs.
We are constantly on the lookout for instrumentalists who would be interested in participating in our music ministry. We also enjoy adding special readers and dramas to our worship. If you would be interested in assisting in one of these areas, please contact our minister of music and worship.
Choirs are provided for all children ages 3 through the fifth grade. These groups meet on Sunday evenings from 6-6:45, running concurrently with our UCD course offerings for adults. Children in each choir learn about using their talents to worship God, and each choir helps lead in worship one Sunday per month. In addition, they prepare special musical programs twice per year – once during the Christmas season and once in the spring. The following choirs are currently available:
This choir is for children ages 3 and 4. Participants must reach their third birthday prior to Oct. 1 to participate. They sing in worship the first Sunday of each month.
The Sonshine Kids are for children currently in kindergarten and first grade. They sing in worship the fourth Sunday of each month.
This choir is for children who are enrolled in the second through fifth grade. They sing in worship the second Sunday of each month.
